Earlier in the month, I mentioned on the blog on my need for more blouse/tanks to go with shorts for the weekends. That’s just what I’ve been living in on weekend these days. It just makes running about with an active toddler so much easier.
I was first drawn to the Willow tank after seeing all the lovely variations on Instagram. This pattern comes in 2 versions; the tank and the dress. It is sleeveless and is fitted at the shoulders before falling into a spacious A-line. The seams at the neckline and armhole is neatened by using bias binding. And alike all other Grainline Studio’s patterns, the instructions are straight-forward and easy to follow. Most importantly, this pattern is a beginner’s pattern which in my opinion makes a great first project for sewing garments. So 2 thumbs up for that!
Light to medium weight fabrics such as cotton, crepe de chine, chambray and even silk is perfect for this pattern.
Sizing wise, I used a size 2 although on hindsight I could have used a size 0 given the space at the waist area. The length of the tank was more on the cropped side which in my version I lengthened it slightly so that I could tuck it in if I wanted to yet work fine if I didn’t.
In this first attempt of mine, I made it in the Cotton + Steel’s half moon cotton fabric. The time taken to sew this piece was fairly quick (all in one evening). Although I must say I did struggle abit with the narrow bias binding for the neckline and armhole. I suppose the effect of the bias binding was not to appear chunky which explains why it was so narrow. So my advice to beginners, use more pins, lots of pressing using the iron and slowly manuvere when sewing it together.
At the end, you will be able to learn techniques that includes sewing a straight seam, darts, hemming and applying bias facing.
While this pattern makes a good tank for spring/summer, by using a more luxurious fabric like silk could immediately jazz it up for a fancy night out. I’m considering making another one in a plain coloured rayon or crepe de chine. Ahh, decisions decisions.
